Planning my “Royal Wedding”

It’s time to write about planning my wedding!! Β My royal themed wedding, to be exact. With an ivory silk and lace ballgown that I made myself, and the two mothers in coordinating Victorian ballgowns, and music from royal weddings of recent years, and maybe with a piece or two from “The Sound of Music” thrown in as well… (I couldn’t get myself to leave out my life-long affinity for the von Trapp story on the most meaningful day of my life!)

It is a wedding planned with peach cascading roses and long satin gloves on the bridesmaids, a red carpet down the aisle as a nod to England’s royal weddings, wedding programs printed with gold Chantilly lace, and at the end of the aisle, the happiest couple you’d ever want to see.

When choosing what theme I wanted for my wedding, I knew I wanted something perfectly elegant, classy, and sumptuous. Β After all, you only get married once, and you really ought to make the celebration of your marriage as lovely as possible, I think.

I must admit I’ve been very disappointed with wedding styles over the last several years – flip flops on brides and bridesmaids, groomsmen in very casual attire, and tablecloths made of… burlap! Β Honest to goodness burlap!Β  Really? Β I mean, if you want a farm themed wedding in a barn that’s perfectly fine, but why are they using burlap decor in church reception halls?

The weddings I always loved and wanted to emulate were some of the elegant ones I grew up attending, plus many of England’s royal weddings which set the bar for the rest of the world. Β (A few inspiration photos below.)

These were Princess Elizabeth’s bridesmaids in 1947, and my bridesmaids gowns looked remarkably similar to them!

I doubt that any girl who watched the royal wedding in 2011 didn’t immediately file away some ideas for her own wedding after watching Catherine Middleton walk down the aisle.Β  I was certainly no exception! Β The last time I was in England in 2013, I actually went on my own mini “royal wedding tour” and visited Westminster Abbey (where William and Catherine were married), and St. Paul’s Cathedral, which was the site of Prince Charles’ and Princess Diana’s wedding back in 1981.

Both cathedrals were absolutely stunning, and I came back to the States thinking that there was just no place like this in America… Β I seriously wondered whether it would be possible to have a cathedral style wedding on the West Coast, and consoled myself with the idea of finding a decent ballroom somewhere.

Well, lo and behold, right before I got engaged, I found photographs online of a historic building from the 1800s that had the loveliest sanctuary with high, vaulted ceilings, stained glass windows, ornate carving in the woodwork, and two balconies above the pews.

Best of all, it was less than half an hour from where I lived! Β That same building also housed an ivory and gold ballroom, complete with chandeliers and a shiny wood dance floor.Β  Then I realized that as a tiny little girl I had actually attended two weddings at this venue!Β  In fact, the first wedding I ever attended took place in this very building when I was two years old. I think God must have had it all planned that I would get married in the same place where I first witnessed a marriage ceremony. Β Wow!

I want to share some behind the scenes photos of the wedding planning process!

The Hair

IMG_20150623_180403

I had my trial hair done by an absolutely top-notch lady (Janelle @ The Prettiest You), and she was able to help me achieve the late Victorian updo I’ve always wanted. (I knew I should have this hairstyle since I saw it on a bride back in 1999… It was the loveliest wedding hairdo I’d seen in person, and my mind has been made up on the subject since.)

The Tiara

I decided to wear the sparkling gold and crystal tiara which I wore to the grand Regency ball in England, so I took it along to my hair appointment.

The Veil

I selected out an ivory two-tier veil to match my gown that is finished with a ruffle effect.Β  I have sewn a number of veils before, but this one at the store was perfect and gave me one less thing to do.

The Gown

Naturally, I started planning and sewing my gown very early on, but I’ll admit it took a little while to finish.Β  When you’re engaged, you’d much rather be talking or dancing with your fiancΓ© than cooped up at your sewing desk, apparently!Β  Nevertheless, I did finish it, and I took lots of pictures to show you all next time.

Wedding Colors

And my wedding colors are – Ivory, Gold, and Peach. I have always loved the combination of ivory and gold for elegance, and peach is possibly my favorite pastel. Β I think that these colors are well suited for a Victorian theme, and peach roses are so timelessly feminine and romantic.

The bridesmaids gowns are peach (just wait till you see them!), but I decided to be nice to the groomsmen and let them wear gold bow ties rather than peach.

Tea Trays

I knew that any good “royal” sort of wedding would needs lots of tea trays, so my dad and I (mainly my dad, actually), worked on making a couple dozen of these for the reception tables. My thinking was to put chocolate covered strawberries, truffles, and fruit on the various trays, in addition to the actual dinner and dessert.

The Petticoat

I am particularly excited to talk about this part, because I purchased my bridal petticoat at Adorned in Grace Bridal, which donates all of its proceeds to helping rescue victims of human trafficking here in the United States. Β It is a wonderful organization that takes donations of gently used wedding dresses, then sells them at a discounted price and puts the money straight into rescuing girls trapped in human trafficking here in the Pacific Northwest. Β (There’s way more of that going on than you might realize.) So I was very happy to be able to support their cause in a small way!

The Music

Without giving away everything about my wedding music (there’s going to be a two-camera shoot video made of the wedding), I will say that it will be very regal! Β I wanted to incorporate pieces from a few of my favorite films, and if you have been reading my blog for a while, you probably have a pretty good idea as to what movies those might be!

The Dancing!

As you probably read in my last blog post, I met my future husband while dancing. (While I was wearing my Scarlett O’Hara ballgown, no less!) Β So I think it goes without saying that we wanted a lot of dancing at our reception. Β In particular, there’s one certain dance from my favorite movie of all time that we started practicing right before we got engaged… Β And I am thoroughly impressed with how well my fiance’ picked up on it!Β  We’ve put in so many hours of dancing together since we met last year (even before we were officially a couple), that we dance quite well together, I think.

    1. Sarah A, you are so sweet! πŸ™‚ Thank you so much for the kind words, and the pictures of the wedding turned out even better than I had hoped for! You’ll definitely want to read the next few upcoming blog posts!

  2. It is good you had ideas of what you wanted for your wedding. My daughter and I had a scrapbook where we placed pictures of wedding ideas and it helped a lot when the time actually came.

    1. Too neat, Lydia! I did the same thing, but on Pinterest instead. πŸ™‚ In fact, I had several thousand wedding pins on Pinterest!

  3. Ahh, I loved getting to see all of these details from your wedding Katrina! I loved seeing your Instagram posts as you went through the process, and I know the event must have been the epitome of elegance!
I remember adoring the pictures of Princess Diana’s wedding as a little girl. I was actually in London the week before William and Kate’s wedding, and saw press boxes being built and workers scrubbing the floor of Westminster! I was even staying at the Goring hotel only to find out that was where Kate would be staying the next week! The doorman asked my friend and I if we were staying for the wedding. πŸ˜‰ We ended up seeing the same doorman when Kate exited the hotel on television! Anyway, sorry for rambling, and congratulations on your marriage!! πŸ™‚

    1. Lauren, that is incredible! What neat memories you must have had as you watched the Royal Wedding on television and remembered being in that very place. πŸ™‚ Thank you for sharing your memories!

  4. How absolutely gorgeous Katrina. Can’t wait to see your next blog. It will be a truly royal event! All the best from NZ, your P&P tour buddy Kattrina xxx

    1. Thank you so much, Kattrina Green! I can hardly wait to share all the pictures!

  5. Hi Katrina. I rejoice for you in your happiness, and I’m loving hearing/seeing all the details.

Question: how did your dad “make” the tea trays?

    1. Hi Narelle! My dad used his drill, lots of plates we purchased, and had to experiment with a lot of supplies from the hardware shop to get it to work! It was quite an undertaking, but he did a fabulous job.

  6. Thank you for sharing with us! It’s all so very beautiful and romantic.

  7. Awww, how lovely & elegant, Katrina. That venue is stunning – so glad you could find the perfect location. Everything looks so classy! (I realized our wedding colors were quite similar! Mine were the cooler version of yours — pale pink, ivory, & silver/grey.) πŸ™‚

    1. Laura, thank you so very much! And I am glad to hear you think it looks classy! I tried to find a balance between too frilly and too understated… And your wedding colors sound lovely!

  8. Lovely! I can’t wait to see how your wedding turns out to be- an embodiment of your tastes and glorifying to our Father! I did have to chuckle, because at my wedding 3 weeks ago I wore a brown and cream dress and me and all the bridesmaids went barefoot. My groom and his men wore blue jeans and not only did we have burlap on every table, it was draped as bunting along the sanctuary (reception area’s) walls! I grew my own sunflowers, wild flowers and zinnias and we wrapped mason jars in burlap and lace and filled each table with jars. Sunflowers were in vases outside as we got married under and arbor behind the church just before sunset. I love that weddings can reflect the taste and interests of each couple!

    1. Thank you, Savannah! Yes, weddings really vary so much, don’t they? I really miss how elegant a lot of weddings used to be when I was little, as our society as a whole has grown so casual. But it is neat that everyone can have their weddings be however they wish!

  9. I just wanted to say that you had my dream childhood wedding. Victorian, peach roses, everything I dreamed about (right down to the photo where you and your bridesmaids look like you are on the set of “Anne of Green Gables). My own wedding was rather rushed, with my dress only finished at 1am! It was an elopement after 5 weeks, complete with registry office and a rather shocked mother, but it was perfect at the time. We’ve been married almost 9 years now, with two beautiful children, and I wish you as much happiness as we have.

Maybe we could renew our vows in a Victorian ceremony… πŸ™‚

    1. Hi Andrea!

Thank you so much for the lovely comment! I have known lots of ladies who did vow renewals and made wedding dresses all over again, so you totally should! πŸ™‚

      Thank you again,
      Katrina πŸ™‚
