Video: First Ladies’ Gowns at the Smithsonian Museum

First Ladies' gowns on mannqeuins behind glass in a musem

This July my husband and I took a trip to Washington, D.C., which coincided with our ten year wedding anniversary.  While we were in town, I absolutely had to revisit the First Ladies’ Gowns exhibit at the National Museum of American History!  The collection showcases many gorgeous dresses worn by our First Ladies, going all the way back to Dolley Madison.  (One of Martha Washington’s outfits is owned by the same museum, but it’s in storage for the time being.)  America has always been a bit more rustic and practical than our European counterparts, so we haven’t preserved as many showstopping antique gowns as England or France have.  (Whenever I’ve traveled to London, I’m always left in awe of the collections of gowns on display in their museums.)  Nevertheless, when you walk through the dimly-lit halls lined with silk dresses once worn by Mary Lincoln, Edith Roosevelt, Jacqueline Kennedy, and Mamie Eisenhower, you can’t help but feel just as proud of our fashion history heritage as if we had our own royal family…

So without further ado, here is the First Ladies’ Gowns video below:

  1. Thank you for bringing back memories of wandering the Smithsonian when I was a college student in DC. I also appreciated the diplomatic and bipartisan approach to First Ladies’ fashion!
